Shanna Armenta is here all day Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as by appointment, for crochet and Tunisian Crochet instruction. And Carlene Avalone is here on Wednesdays and Saturdays for knitting and crochet instruction.  Call in advance to insure that the teacher you want will be in the shop.  Marcela teaches in English &/or Spanish.  Lessons cost $15.00 for up to 1 hour, $25 for 2 hours.  (You must have purchased yarn and needles at the shop)* These are NOT private lessons; there may be other students working with the teacher at the same time as you.  Private lessons are $25.00/hr.

*You must purchase yarn from Grandma’s in order to take advantage of our very reasonable charge for lessons.  If you have bought yarn here, you may bring in any yarn for help or instruction. Your fiber club card (which you get when you buy yarn from us) entitles you to our affordable lessons. If you have not purchased yarn from us, lessons are $25.00/hour.

Come in to learn the following (or any other knitting or crocheting techniques that you would like to learn):

Learn to read a Pattern: all of those abbreviations can make a person crazy until you know what they mean.  Learn to decipher  “K2tog and (K2, P3) 6 times.  Learning tricks to keep track of your rows and how to read your knitting will transform your frustration to relaxation.

Fix your mistakes: Learn everything from picking up stitches to fixing cables and lace, to correcting color work, and everything in between.  Please come with a 4″ X 4″ stockinetee swatch, but do not bind off.

Blocking: Learn to properly block all your knitted and/or crocheted projects to give them that “professional” finish.  Vicky will show you how to use blocking wires, as well as other blocking methods.

LEARN to use Magic Loop instead of DPNs for those small diameter projects.

Entralac Scarf: Learn basic entrelac technique making a simple scarf or cowl.  You will be able to apply this technique to make felted purses, afghans, pillows, etc.  Ongoing instruction is available as you may need it.

Beginning Lace Knitting: You will learn the basics of lace knitting making simple lace wash cloths.  You will learn how to make increases, decreases and read basic lace instructions. Prerequisite: You need to know how to cast on, bind off, knit & purl.

Modular knitting: Learn to knit a geometrically patterned scarf in which the yarn is not broken, using increases and decreases.

Short Rows:  Create a unique, wavy design scarf with guided instruction from Jimmy Martinez while you are learning to knit short rows.

No Sew Raglan Sweater: Knit this sweater with your choice of yarn and needles.  Constructed from the top down, this can be either a cardigan or pull over.  Two classes of 2 hours each, then help as an “as needed” basis.  Required skills: Cast on, Knit, Purl, Bind off.  Learn to increase, decrease and incorporate lace or stitch patterns, if desired.

Basic Crochet: Learn the very foundations of crochet so you can move out and do some of the really fancy stuff!  Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, back and front loop single crochet, double, half double and triple crochet.

Other classes taught on an individual basis, or in groups:  $15./hr.

Spindle Spinning: Spinners have been using hand spindles for at least 10,000 years!  Learn to use this oldest of methods to produce fine yarns.  Drop spindles are compact, affordable  and can easily go anywhere.  You can spin while waiting in line, while sitting on a bus or plane, anywhere, anytime you have a few minutes to “get into the zone.”

Repairs and Finishing services are available too.
