Join Grandma’s Spinning Wheel and Rowan Tree Tree Travel next summer for a fiber-infused journey to the Emerald Isle, May 29- June 7, 2022. Our 9 night/10 day trip includes time in the southwest counties of Cork and Kerry, along the wild Atlantic west coast, through the gentle interior lands and concludes in the country’s vibrant capitol city, Dublin. Along the way, we’ll meet some of Ireland's most influential fiber folks - teachers, designers, dyers and doers - and hear about the current struggle to keep Irish wool production alive. We'll also spend time at historic sites, farm-to-table venues, famous distilleries, lavish country houses, cozy inns and get to know Irish craic in local pubs. It’s going to be grand. We can’t wait to share it all with you!

Sunday, May 29 ⎪ Welcome to Ireland!  Arrive at Dublin International Airport. We’ll stretch our legs with a bit of exploring in and around Dublin before heading down to our comfortable country house hotel in County Cork. A sumptuous dinner and relaxed evening on the grounds will allow everyone to recover from their overnight flight.

Monday, May 30  |   No one exemplifies Irish knitting more these days than Carol Feller. We’ll enjoy a two part knitting workshop with her for the next two mornings. In the afternoon, visits to Hedgehog Fibre, Vibes & Scribes, Blarney Castle and a bit of free time to explore Cork City.

Tuesday, May 31 |  Part 2 of Carol’s workshop, then we’re headed off to explore nearby County Kerry. This part of Ireland is dramatic with mountains and coastline. We’ll stop in to see some sheepdogs at work, visit with the lace makers of Kenmare and drive a bit of the Ring of Kerry before stopping to explore the lovely town of Killarney.

Wednesday, June 1 | Heading north now, and west! We’re stopping in to learn about the natural dye studio at Apple Oak Fibreworks, exploring the tiny town of Adare and hitting the coast at the famous Cliffs of Moher before the day’s end. We’ll land in tiny Doolin, where traditional music sessions are some of the best in all of Ireland.

Thursday, June 2 | A full day on the Aran Islands. We’ll ferry over to the smallest and closest of the Aran Islands for a knitting workshop, horse and buggy ride around the island and time with one of our favorite locals.
Friday, June 3 | So many glorious places to visit on the west coast. Time and weather dependent, we’ll stop in at The Burren, Irish Fibre Crafters, and the town of Galway before turning toward Ireland’s interior and time at the hauntingly lovely Clanmacnoise Monastery. By end of day, we’ll land at one of our favorite historic homes, now a family-run inn, near Port Laois (pronounced leash) for fantastic farm-to-table food and warm hospitality.

Snippet Itinerary, continued

Saturday, June 4 |  What’s edible in the Irish landscape? We’ll find out with a foraging walk on the grounds of our historic hotel. Then we’re off to explore more of the region’s textile history in nearby Graiguenamanagh, Mountmellick and Kilkenny.

Sunday, June 5 and Monday, June 6  |  We explore all that Dublin has to offer, including a tour at the Guinness Brewery, free time to explore your personal interests, and a final, celebratory dinner with traditional Irish storytellers.

Tuesday, June 7 |  Depart for Dublin International Airport and flights home.
